Factors affecting heterotic grouping with cross-pollinating crops

Jose Marcelo Soriano Viana et al.

Summary: Heterotic grouping based on analyses of heterosis or combining ability and molecular diversity has been inconsistent. This study simulated grain yield and molecular data for different populations, and found that genetic control, genotyping, and genetic diversity all play roles in determining heterotic grouping. The study identified different heterotic groups based on genetic frequencies, and showed correlations between genetic distance and heterosis in the context of different molecular markers.

Genetic diversity and population structure of early and extra-early maturing maize germplasm adapted to sub-Saharan Africa

Baffour Badu-Apraku et al.

Summary: Assessment and effective utilization of genetic diversity in breeding programs are crucial for sustainable genetic improvement. In this study, 439 early and extra-early maize inbred lines were analyzed for genetic variability, with results showing informative SNP markers and grouping of the lines into four major classes based on selection history, ancestry, and kernel color. The study provides valuable insights for breeders to develop breeding strategies for sustainable maize production.

The genetic structure of CIMMYT and US inbreds and its implications for tropical maize breeding

Rui Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the genetic structure of temperate maize inbreds with expired Plant Variety Protection in tropical maize breeding programs using DNA markers. The analysis revealed two major groups, CIMMYT and ex-PVP, with ex-PVP lines clustering according to BSSS and NSSS heterotic groups. Genetic divergence estimates favored breeding with different heterotic groups and could be used to maximize genetic divergence and combining ability in CIMMYT heterotic groups.
