Clinical Profiles of Childhood Astrovirus-, Sapovirus-, and Norovirus-Associated Acute Gastroenteritis in Pediatric Emergency Departments in Alberta, 2014-2018

Gillian A. M. Tarr et al.

Summary: This study described and compared the clinical course of acute gastroenteritis in children with astrovirus, sapovirus, and norovirus infections. It found that astrovirus infections had a higher prevalence and longer duration of diarrhea compared to norovirus infections. Sapovirus infections were more similar to norovirus infections, but had a longer duration of vomiting.

Molecular and epidemiological characterization of human adenovirus and classic human astrovirus in children with acute diarrhea in Shanghai, 2017-2018

Lijuan Lu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the detection rate of HAdV and classic HAstV in children with acute diarrhea in Shanghai was 8.58%, with the predominant viral subtypes being HAdV-F41 and HAstV-1. Over half of the infections occurred in children under 36 months. HAdV infections were more prevalent in summer, while classic HAstV infections were more common in winter.

Summary: Sapovirus is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis in children with high genetic diversity. The virus can be detected year-round, with peak seasons during the winter months. There were no significant differences in the severity of gastroenteritis by genogroup or genotype.
