Comprehensive understanding of the effects of metallic cations on enzymatic hydrolysis of humic acid-pretreated waste wheat straw

Wei Tang et al.

Summary: The research found that humic acids (HA) negatively affected enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency in lignocellulose pretreatment, but introducing metallic cations (Fe3+) to associate with HA can improve enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. This strategy provides an economically viable means for future biorefinery developments to produce valuable biochemicals, biofuels, and biomaterials.

Structural characterization of the lignin-carbohydrate complex in biomass pretreated with Fenton oxidation and hydrothermal treatment and consequences on enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency

So-Yeon Jeong et al.

Summary: This study investigated lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) isolated from raw and pretreated biomass to study the structural changes during Fenton oxidation and hydrothermal treatment and their impact on enzymatic hydrolysis. It was found that yellow poplar and larch showed different degradation rates and LCCs compositions during pretreatment, affecting the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis, with β-β', β-5, and γ-ester linkages playing a significant role.

Summary: This study revealed that removing surface lignin significantly decreased the yield for enzymatic hydrolysis of DAP-BR and that the affinity constants of all tested lignins exhibited good correlations with the effects on enzymatic digestibility. Additionally, MWL samples showed a stronger affinity for cellulase enzymes compared to SL samples due to their higher molecular weight and hydrophobicity.

Impact of phenolic compound as activators or inhibitors on the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose

Ioanna Stamogiannou et al.

Summary: Different classes of phenolic compounds have distinct effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose, acting as activators or inhibitors. The presence of the -OCH3 group is found to be crucial for the activating effect of phenolic compounds. Adsorption analysis and SEM images indicate that the activating or inhibiting action of phenolic compounds can lead to different adsorption modes, either on the enzyme or on the substrate.
