Influence of water washing treatment on Ulva prolifera-derived biochar properties and sorption characteristics of ofloxacin

Chenghu Yang et al.

Summary: The water washing treatment significantly altered the physiochemical structures of Ulva prolifera-derived biochars, enhancing the sorption capacity of ofloxacin. The sorption capacity was influenced by pyrolysis temperature and solution pH, with different mechanisms dominant under various pH conditions. The two-compartment first-order model was suitable for describing the sorption kinetics, showing changes in contribution ratios between fast and slow sorption compartments after water washing treatment.

Catalytic co-pyrolysis of rice straw and ulva prolifera macroalgae: Effects of process parameter on bio-oil up-gradation

Jingyuan Hao et al.

Summary: The co-pyrolysis of rice straw and ulva prolifera macroalgae with nickel-iron-layered double oxides catalysts showed increased bio-oil yield, with higher quality bio-oil achieved by acid washing the macroalgae to remove ash content. Additionally, catalytic pyrolysis up-gradation decreased bio-oil yield, but the use of 5%Ga/NiFe-LDO/AC catalyst improved bio-oil quality.

A systematic review on consumer acceptance of alternative proteins: Pulses, algae, insects, plant-based meat alternatives, and cultured meat

M. C. Onwezen et al.

Summary: Consumers' dietary patterns have a significant impact on health and the environment, and one possible solution is to substitute meat consumption with alternative protein sources. This systematic review identifies 91 articles focusing on consumer acceptance of five alternative proteins, showing that acceptance levels vary across different types of proteins with insects and cultured meat having the lowest acceptance. Factors such as taste, health motives, familiarity, attitudes, food neophobia, disgust, and social norms drive consumer acceptance across various alternative proteins.

An overview on engineering the surface area and porosity of biochar

Lijian Leng et al.

Summary: Surface area and porosity are crucial physical properties of biochar that significantly impact its applications, with biomass composition and pyrolysis temperature being major influencing factors. Activation, particularly through chemical means, is the most effective way to enhance biochar surface area and porosity, while other treatment methods like carbonaceous materials coating and ball milling can also contribute to improvement. Future research should focus on developing treatment technologies to simultaneously enhance the functionality and porous structure of biochar.
