α-FeOOH nanowires loaded on carbon paper anodes improve the performance of microbial fuel cells

Jiali Xian et al.

Summary: Nanowires synthesized from metal oxides, specifically alpha-FeOOH nanowires, were shown to enhance the electrochemical activity and power generation efficiency of microbial fuel cells (MFC). The nanowires decreased electron transfer resistance, increased power density of MFC by 3.2 times, and facilitated biofilm formation and biomass increase on the electrode surface. This study provides further evidence for the potential applications of metal nanowires in electricity generation fields.

Extracellular Electron Exchange Capabilities of Desulfovibrio ferrophilus and Desulfopila corrodens

Dandan Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that Desulfovibrio ferrophilus cannot directly extract electrons from solid-phase electron-donating surfaces, but promotes the reduction of Fe(III) oxide by releasing a soluble electron shuttle. It has adopted a novel combination of strategies for extracellular electron transport, which may have biogeochemical and technological significance.

Roadmap on emerging concepts in the physical biology of bacterial biofilms: from surface sensing to community formation

Gerard C. L. Wong et al.

Summary: Bacterial biofilms are communities of bacteria that are essential to microbial physiology, with a complex relationship between single-cell behavior and collective community behavior. Biofilm microbiology, a relatively young field, has attracted physicists who use physics to study fundamental concepts in bacterial biofilms. The combination of physics and biology in this field exemplifies a new synthesis, rather than just a division of labor.

Summary: The study found that loading PtNPs/rGO on the cathode significantly improves the performance of MES, with a lower overpotential for the HER reaction compared to bare carbon felt. This increased local H2 concentration around the cathode enhances the MES performance, making the artificial composite system composed by HER electrocatalysts a promising approach to meet the needs of carbon cycling and sustainable energy in the future.

Structure of Geobacter pili reveals secretory rather than nanowire behaviour

Yangqi Gu et al.

Summary: Geobacter species transfer electrons extracellularly through microbial nanowires known as surface appendages. Recent studies have revealed that the nanowires consist of cytochromes OmcS and OmcZ, rather than the previously believed pili composed of PilA-N protein. The use of PilA-C in assembling heterodimeric pili resembles the structure and function of type 2 secretion pseudopili, indicating a potential widespread effect on diverse electron-transferring microorganisms.

Iron Oxidation by a Fused Cytochrome-Porin Common to Diverse Iron-Oxidizing Bacteria

Jessica L. Keffer et al.

Summary: Iron (Fe) oxidation is a crucial biogeochemical process on Earth, with microbial iron oxidizers playing a significant role. Studies on Cyc2 in neutrophilic iron oxidizers suggest that it functions as an iron oxidase, providing new insights into the metabolism of these organisms. The presence of Cyc2 in a wide variety of iron oxidizers indicates its importance in iron oxidation processes.

Using structure-function relationships to understand the mechanism of phenazine-mediated extracellular electron transfer in Escherichia coli

Zayn Rhodes et al.

Summary: Phenazines are nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds that can facilitate extracellular electron transfer as electron shuttles. By combining experimental data with density functional theory calculations and multivariate linear regression modeling, the structure-function relationships in phenazine-mediated electron transfer were understood. Predictive models were developed to introduce phenazines as endogenous mediators into bacteria for metabolic engineering approaches.
