Isolation and characterization of nanocrystalline cellulose from cocoa pod husk (CPH) biomass wastes

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were isolated from cocoa pod husk waste and characterized for their crystallinity, structure, thermal characteristics, morphology, and dimensions. It was found that increasing chemical treatments led to improved purity, crystallinity index, and thermal stability of the extracted materials. The CNCs isolated from cocoa pod husk had a diameter of 10-60 nm, length of 41-155 nm, and a crystallinity index of 67.60%.

Optimization of Microwave-Assisted Alkali Pretreatment for Enhancement of Delignification Process of Cocoa Pod Husk

Summary: The optimization of microwave-assisted alkaline pretreatment was conducted to achieve the optimal delignification of cocoa pod husk. Factors such as particle size, irradiation time, and NaOH solution ratio were found to have significant effects on the delignification process. MAA pretreatment was shown to effectively remove lignin and hemicellulose while slightly increasing cellulose content in CPH.
