Extracellular Electron Exchange Capabilities of Desulfovibrio ferrophilus and Desulfopila corrodens

Dandan Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that Desulfovibrio ferrophilus cannot directly extract electrons from solid-phase electron-donating surfaces, but promotes the reduction of Fe(III) oxide by releasing a soluble electron shuttle. It has adopted a novel combination of strategies for extracellular electron transport, which may have biogeochemical and technological significance.

An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Mechanisms for Electron Uptake by Methanosarcina acetivorans during Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer

Dawn E. Holmes et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the genetically tractable methanogen Methanosarcina acetivorans can grow via direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) in coculture with Geobacter metallireducens. Transcriptomic analysis reveals higher expression of outer-surface multi-heme c-type cytochrome MmcA during DIET-based growth, while deletion of mmcA inhibits DIET. Additionally, the study provides insights into the potential role of aromatic amino acids in forming electrically conductive archaella and the involvement of membrane-bound complexes in energy production from carbon dioxide reduction during DIET.

Correlation of Key Physiological Properties of Methanosarcina Isolates with Environment of Origin

Jinjie Zhou et al.

Summary: It is observed that Methanosarcina species can be divided into two distinct physiological groups, with type I focusing on H-2 production and consumption while type II avoids H-2 and possesses genes for an Rnf complex and the membrane-bound cytochrome MmcA. The distribution of Methanosarcina in different environments suggests that type I is suited for high-energy environments like anaerobic digesters, while type II is an adaptation to lower-energy environments like organic-poor anaerobic soils and sediments. This distinction is crucial in understanding the role of Methanosarcina in methanogenic environments, particularly in relation to H-2 metabolism.

Stainless steel corrosion via direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer by Geobacter species

Hai-Yan Tang et al.

Summary: This study found that the mechanism of microbial corrosion of stainless steel is significantly different from that of pure iron. Unlike in the corrosion of pure iron, H-2 is not abiotically produced from stainless steel during microbial corrosion, and direct iron-to-microbe electron transfer is a feasible route for stainless steel corrosion.
