Heterotrophic cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria under non-sterile conditions in digestate and hydrolyzed straw

Daniel Pleissner et al.

Summary: The study explores the non-sterile heterotrophic cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria in the presence of digestate and straw hydrolysate. Results indicate that proteolytic treatment of digestate can enhance growth rates and cell concentrations of G. sulphuraria, and the algae can utilize glucose obtained after straw hydrolysis. This research may offer promising strategies for utilizing agricultural waste streams to produce algal biomass rich in proteins.

Life cycle assessment of hetero- and phototrophic as well as combined cultivations of Galdieria sulphuraria

Anne Karolin Thielemann et al.

Summary: The study conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a hypothetical model combining phototrophic and heterotrophic cultivations, which showed that exchanging produced gases could be a potential strategy to reduce the environmental impact of microalgae cultivation. The production of Galdieria sulphuraria in a combined cultivation system was found to have environmental benefits and almost twice lower carbon footprint compared to separate phototrophic cultivation. This combination of cultivation activities is recommended as a sustainable strategy for producers dealing with phototrophic cultivation to reduce environmental impact.
