A novel submerged anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactor coupled to membrane distillation for water reclamation from municipal wastewater

Barbara Caroline Ricci et al.

Summary: The novel OMBR-MD configuration proposed for domestic sewage treatment achieved high removal efficiencies for organic matter, phosphorous, and ammonium nitrogen. However, potential issues with organic matter accumulation and membrane fouling from salinity buildup should be addressed in later stages of operation. The distillate produced met potable water standards and proved to be a feasible alternative for treating municipal wastewater.

Impact of pulsating flows on particle deposition in forward osmosis with spacers

Andreas Kastl et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to pulsating flows, the deposition rate of particles can be up to 2.6 times higher in a steady state. As a result, the average deposition decreased by a factor of 3.5 from steady state (109 +/- 67 beads mm(-2)) to pulsating feed flow (31 +/- 17 beads mm(-2)) after 4 hours of deposition. These results provide new fundamental insights into the constraints and advantages of using pulsating flows for fouling mitigation in forward osmosis systems.

Progress in osmotic membrane bioreactors research: Contaminant removal, microbial community and bioenergy production in wastewater

Ahmad Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: OMBR is an innovative process with superior performance in bioenergy production, contaminant removal, and low fouling tendency. However, salinity build-up is its main drawback. Identifying microbial communities can improve bioenergy production and contaminant treatment processes.

An osmotic membrane bioreactor-clarifier system with a deep learning model for simultaneous reduction of salt accumulation and membrane fouling

Nguyen Duc Viet et al.

Summary: The study found that the hybrid configuration of OMBRC achieved better performance in reducing salt accumulation and membrane fouling compared to the conventional OMBRC, with a 3-fold increase in water flux and a 6-fold increase in flux recovery. The hybrid OMBRC also exhibited higher removal rates of ammonium, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen by 15%, 11%, and 7% respectively compared to the OMBRC.

Forward osmosis system design and optimization using a commercial cellulose triacetate hollow fibre membrane module for energy efficient desalination

Syed Muztuza Ali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop mathematical design models for energy efficient desalination using forward osmosis. The models were validated with experimental data and used to optimize system design, ultimately reducing energy consumption. The study found that a commercial hollow fibre membrane module was more energy efficient compared to a spiral wound membrane module.
