Bioprocess for co-production of polyhydroxybutyrate and violacein using Himalayan bacterium Iodobacter sp. PCH194

Vijay Kumar et al.

Summary: A unique bacterium, Iodobacter sp. PCH 194, from the kettle lake at Sach Pass in western Indian Himalaya was found to co-produce PHA and violacein pigment. Through optimization, high-purity PHA and violacein pigment were obtained under specific culture conditions. Experimental validation showed that violacein has anticancer and antimicrobial activities.

Anabolism of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) by Cupriavidus necator DSM 545 from spent coffee grounds oil

Haydn Rhys Ingram et al.

Summary: Oil extracted from spent coffee grounds was found to be a highly suitable carbon substrate for biosynthesis of P(3HB-co-3 HV) copolymers by Cupriavidus necator DSM 545. Cells grown on this oil reached a higher 3 HV content compared to those grown on sunflower oil, indicating the potential of using spent coffee grounds oil as a more effective precursor.

Anti-tumor activity and immunogenicity of a succinoglycan riclin

Yunxia Yang et al.

Summary: The research confirmed that succinoglycan riclin, a natural polysaccharide, exhibited anti-tumor effects in tumor-bearing mice by inhibiting tumor growth and promoting lymphocytes proliferation. Furthermore, riclin reduced splenocytes apoptosis and altered metabolic profiles. Succinoglycan riclin could potentially serve as an anti-tumor agent for functional food and pharmaceutical purposes.

A critical review on the development stage of biorefinery systems towards the management of apple processing-derived waste

Mukesh Kumar Awasthi et al.

Summary: Apple processing waste, such as apple pomace, is currently underutilized and mainly disposed of in landfills or informally. Research efforts have focused on incorporating apple pomace into feed and food systems, as well as developing eco-friendly techniques for extraction of pectin and phenolics. However, more research is needed for the recovery of value added products from apple pomace, with an integrated approach including techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment likely to reveal promising valorization routes.

Metabolic potential of the moderate halophile Yangia sp. ND199 for co-production of polyhydroxyalkanoates and exopolysaccharides

Luis Romero Soto et al.

Summary: The study investigated the co-production potential of EPS and PHA by Yangia sp. ND199, a moderately halophilic bacterium isolated from mangrove samples in Northern Vietnam. Genome sequence analysis of a closely related strain from Malaysia revealed genes encoding enzymes for EPS biosynthesis. Cultivation parameters such as different sugars and salt concentrations were found to influence the production of EPS and PHA, with fructose leading to higher PHA accumulation and sucrose and yeast extract yielding higher EPS production.
