Photocatalytic production of hydroxy radicals and photogenerated holes are the main mechanisms of bactericidal activity, along with the strong affinity of the nanocomposites to bacterial cell surfaces. The metal valence states play a critical role in the design and engineering of high-performance antimicrobial agents based on metal oxide nanocomposites.
