Precomposting and green manure amendment for effective vermitransformation of hazardous coir industrial waste into enriched vermicompost

Natchimuthu Karmegam et al.

Summary: The study showed that vermitransformation of coir pith into enriched vermifertilizer by amending with Sesbania sesban and cow dung resulted in higher fertilization index and efficiency of nutrient recovery rate. Combinations T2((4:3:3)) and T3((5:3:2)) were found to be the most suitable for E. fetida and E. eugeniae in converting CP into enriched vermicompost, respectively.

Metal induced non-metallothionein protein in earthworm: A new pathway for cadmium detoxification in chloragogenous tissue

Nazneen Hussain et al.

Summary: Earthworms neutralize toxic metals with metallothionein, but a novel cadmium binding protein called metal induced protein (MIP) is induced in the intestines in a cadmium rich environment, showing significant accumulation and depositing the metal in specific tissue.

Vermicomposting: A management tool to mitigate solid waste

Fatimah Alshehrei et al.

Summary: Solid waste management in Saudi Arabia is a serious issue due to rapid industrialization, population growth, and urbanization. Recycling and sorting are still in their early stages, while techniques like incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification have high costs. Composting and vermicomposting are seen as economically viable methods, but pollutants like heavy metals pose challenges to biological treatments.
