Does exogenous carbon source always promote algal biomass and nutrients removal in algal-bacterial wastewater remediation?

Yuming Zhong et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the interactive network analysis between algae and wastewater-borne bacteria to identify beneficial bacteria and assess the impact of glycerol on a beneficial bacterial strain. Results showed that co-cultivating microalgae and Pseudomonas dramatically enhanced biomass yield and nutrients removal efficiencies, but the addition of glycerol led to the collapse of the algal-bacterial consortia in the late stage of co-cultivation, reducing treatment efficiency and biomass. It is suggested that non-fermentative bacteria as main probiotics in algal-based wastewater remediation should be used to provide small-molecule-weight organics as carbon sources.

Summary: In recent years, microalgae have been considered as alternative feedstock for bioenergy production. Cultivating microalgae in wastewaters with bacterial interaction can efficiently remediate nutrient-rich wastewater and maintain high biomass yield. The mutual relationship between algae and bacteria can promote sustainable development in green industry by utilizing microalgae as primary producers of organic compounds and bacteria as decomposers.

Phosphorus removal performance of microbial-enhanced constructed wetlands that treat saline wastewater

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that using intertidal wetland sediments as a microbial source for CWs can effectively improve phosphorus removal rates, with bacteria such as phosphorus-accumulating organisms enhancing microbial transformation of phosphorus. However, the addition of IWS increased phosphorus loss via substrate accumulation and decreased phosphorus removal rate via plant uptake.

Effects of substrate stress and light intensity on enhanced biological phosphorus removal in a photo-activated sludge system

A. Y. A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of substrate composition and light intensity on the performance of a laboratory-scale EBPR-PAS system. Results showed that wastewater with high HCO3 and low NH4-N levels favored microalgal growth but had poor phosphorus removal, while adjusting the levels to balance PAOs and microalgae symbiosis positively influenced phosphorus removal. The system could operate without external aeration and achieve satisfactory phosphorus removal even at low light intensities.

Jiacong Huang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that food production, urbanization, and other anthropogenic activities have a significant impact on water quality in China's rivers, with poorer water quality observed in the eastern regions. Total phosphorus and ammonia-nitrogen are identified as the main factors contributing to water quality impairments, while indicators of urbanization and farmland extent are the strongest predictors. Tailored remedial measures based on specific landscape characteristics are crucial to combat eutrophication and improve ecological conditions.

Camila Ester Hollas et al.

Summary: The second-generation phosphorus recovery technologies include chemical extraction, thermal treatments, nanofiltration, ion exchange, electrochemical processes, and biological processes, which can replace the first-generation phosphorus originally mined from rock phosphates. The choice of the best technology depends on the characteristics of the waste, the purpose of the process, the cost, and the availability of land. The recovery of phosphorus not only addresses the issues of depleted deposits and phosphorus accumulation but also reduces environmental damage.
