Linking microbial mechanism with bioelectricity production in sludge matrix-fed microbial fuel cells: Freezing/thawing liquid versus fermentation liquor

Xiaodong Xin et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the microbial mechanism associated with bioelectricity output in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) fed with different substrates and proposed a schematic representation of cooperative interactions in anodic microbial consortia. The F/T liquid cultivated functional microbial groups for organics degradation and electrogenesis, while fermentation liquor fostered higher microbial diversity and electrogenesis efficiency.

Effect of substrate types on contaminant removals, electrochemical characteristics and microbial community in vertical flow constructed wetlands for treatment of urban sewage

Shaoyuan Bai et al.

Summary: This study revealed that coke as a substrate in vertical flow constructed wetlands can achieve higher removal rates of COD, NH4+-N and TP compared to quartz sand, primarily due to the adsorption of pollutants by the substrate and microbial degradation.

Nitrogen removal and microbial community diversity in single-chamber electroactive biofilm reactors with different ratios of the cathode surface area to reactor volume

Jaecheul Yu et al.

Summary: The successful removal of nitrogen in single-chamber electroactive biofilm reactors (EBRs) was reported in our recent study. The ratio of the air-cathode surface area to the reactor volume (AV ratio) and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) were found to affect the removal of nitrogen in EBRs. Different EBRs showed varying microbial communities involved in the nitrogen cycle, highlighting the importance of diverse microorganisms for successful nitrogen removal.
