Durotaxis: the mechanical control of directed cell migration

Jaime A. Espina et al.

Summary: Directed cell migration is crucial in physiological and pathological processes, influenced by both mechanical and chemical signals. Recent focus has been on the mechanical guidance of cell migration via durotaxis, with studies showing how cells sense and respond to environmental mechanics, leading to biased migration. Advances in understanding durotaxis in vivo and its integration with chemotaxis for haptotaxis in native environments have also been discussed.

Theory for Durotactic Axon Guidance

Hadrien Oliveri et al.

Summary: During nervous system development, neurons extend axon bundles that form neuronal networks by meeting other neurons. The migration and guidance of these bundles rely on external cues and can be modeled by rigidity gradients using morphoelastic rods theory. At rigidity interfaces, the motion of axon bundles can be likened to optical ray theory, following Snell's law, indicating guidance similar to optical lenses and fibers created by regions of different stiffnesses.

Know How to Regrow-Axon Regeneration in the Zebrafish Spinal Cord

Vasiliki Tsata et al.

Summary: The capacity for long-distance axon regeneration and functional recovery after spinal cord injury is poor in mammals but remarkable in some vertebrates, like fish and salamanders. The cellular and molecular basis of this difference is starting to emerge, including the identification of target cells reacting to injury and cues directing pro-regenerative responses. Zebrafish is one of the most understood models in terms of successful spinal cord regeneration, with neuron-intrinsic and extrinsic factors playing pivotal roles in axon regeneration and function recovery.

Active elasticity drives the formation of periodic beading in damaged axons

Davide Riccobelli

Summary: This study investigates the morphological changes of axons in various pathological conditions and develops a mathematical model based on continuum mechanics and nonlinear elasticity theory. Through linear stability analysis and finite element simulations, it is revealed that the decrease in shear modulus of axoplasm due to disruption of the cytoskeleton leads to active contraction of the cortex and the appearance of a beading pattern.

Neuronal Growth and Formation of Neuron Networks on Directional Surfaces

Ilya Yurchenko et al.

Summary: The formation of neuron networks is a complex process guided by environmental stimuli such as intercellular interactions, biochemical cues, and the mechanical and geometrical properties of the growth substrate. Experimental data suggests that cytoskeletal dynamics play a critical role in steering axonal growth. Axons follow geometrical patterns through a contact-guidance mechanism, which has potential implications for bioengineering novel substrates to guide neuronal growth and promote nerve repair.

Numerical investigation of biomechanically coupled growth in cortical folding

Shuolun Wang et al.

Summary: Cortical folding is a dynamic process influenced by gene expression, cellular mechanisms, and mechanical forces. Neurons are sensitive to their mechanical environment, leading to non-uniform cortical growth in gyri and sulci. The model suggests that gyral-sulcal thickness variations are specific to low stiffness ratios, with cortical growth higher in gyri than in sulci.
