Energy expenditure during cell spreading influences the cellular response to matrix stiffness

Jing Xie et al.

Summary: Cells respond to mechanical cues from the extracellular matrix by adjusting their cytoskeleton and forming focal adhesions, which can lead to changes in ATP levels and activation of AMPK. This can affect cell spreading and tension, as well as influence stem cell fate in response to ECM mechanics. Lowered ATP levels on softer substrates limit cellular mechanoresponses.

Polymerized Albumin Receptor of Hepatitis B Virus for Evading the Reticuloendothelial System

Kurumi Takagi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the surface modification of bio-nanocapsules (BNCs) with polymerized albumin receptors (PAR) to enhance their evasion of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) in mouse liver. Results showed that peptides conjugated with sufficient PAR activity on nanoparticles reduced capture by Kupffer cells and prolonged circulation time in vivo. This suggests that PAR peptides could be an alternative strategy for improving the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of future nanomedicines.

Facile synthesis of Mg-doped calcium silicate porous nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery and ovarian cancer treatment

Hanwei Cui et al.

Summary: Chemotherapic cancer treatment has been limited by side effects and lack of target specificity. pH-triggered drug delivery systems can improve drug delivery to cancer cells. The synthesis of highly porous CaMgSiO4 nanospheres with uniform Mg doping shows promise for pH-responsive drug delivery. Characterizations showed increased surface area and drug loading capacity, with pH-triggered drug release and high cytotoxicity to cancer cells.

Cu-Ferrocene-Functionalized CaO2 Nanoparticles to Enable Tumor-Specific Synergistic Therapy with GSH Depletion and Calcium Overload

Hanjing Kong et al.

Summary: The study successfully designed and synthesized fine CaO2 nanoparticles with Cu-ferrocene molecules on the surface, which release Ca2+ ions and H2O2 under acidic conditions and promote the production of (OH)-O-center dot. The enhanced (OH)-O-center dot induction and intracellular calcium overload contribute significantly to antitumor effects in vitro and in vivo.

Kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, a flavone derived from Tetrastigma hemsleyanum, suppresses lung adenocarcinoma via the calcium signaling pathway

Yonglu Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Tetrastigma hemsleyanum tuber flavonoids (THTF) could effectively suppress lung adenocarcinoma cell viability by inducing apoptosis through cytoskeleton collapse, mitochondrial dysfunction, and calcium overload. Proteomic analysis supported the in vitro findings, suggesting THTF and its major component kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (K3R) as promising anti-cancer agents for lung cancer prevention and therapy.
