Dynamic covalent hydrogels as biomaterials to mimic the viscoelasticity of soft tissues

Shengchang Tang et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM) are crucial in tissue regeneration, wound healing, and disease progression. Synthetic materials that mimic these properties help in understanding how cells sense and respond to their mechanical environment. Research is focusing on using dynamic covalent chemistries to replicate the dynamic mechanical properties of soft tissues.

Dual-Crosslinked Dynamic Hydrogel Incorporating {Mo154} with pH and NIR Responsiveness for Chemo-Photothermal Therapy

Gabriela Guedes et al.

Summary: Polyoxometalates, specifically the {Mo-154} wheel-shaped cluster, show promise as photothermal agents, but toxicity limits systemic administration. This study introduces an injectable and self-healing hydrogel incorporating {Mo-154} and doxorubicin for synergistic photothermal and chemotherapy applications. The hydrogel's dual crosslinking allows for self-healing after injection, while a stimuli-responsive release system enables precise delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs triggered by dual near infrared radiation and pH changes for effective cancer tumor ablation with no systemic toxicity.

Preparation of dynamic covalently crosslinking keratin hydrogels based on thiol/disulfide bonds exchange strategy

Mianhong Chen et al.

Summary: The DCC keratin hydrogels extracted by reducing agents show characteristics such as injectability, self-healing, self-adapting, biocompatibility, and redox-responsive capacity. The extracted type II neutral/alkali keratin plays a critical role in imparting the keratin hydrogels with reversible behaviors. Using a simple thioldisulfide bonds exchange strategy to prepare DCC keratin hydrogels avoids the extra introduction of chemical crosslinking agents.

NIR-responsive metal-containing polymer hydrogel for light-controlled microvalve

Xusheng Lin et al.

Summary: A functional metal-containing polymer hydrogel was successfully prepared by covalently cross-linking N-isopropylacrylamide using a new metalla-aromatic complex as the cross-linking agent. The hydrogel exhibited excellent photothermal properties under NIR laser irradiation, and the phase transition could be reversibly controlled by the irradiation or nonirradiation of the NIR laser, making it suitable for light-controlled hydrogel microvalves. This NIR light-responsive metal-containing polymer hydrogel represents a new smart hydrogel material.

Near Infrared (NIR) Light Therapy of Eye Diseases: A Review

Qin Zhu et al.

Summary: Near infrared (NIR) light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), has gained significant attention as a novel therapeutic approach in ophthalmology in recent years. It has been shown to increase cytochrome oxidase and superoxide dismutase activities, inducing metabolic and antioxidant effects, as well as boost cerebral blood flow and cognitive functions without adverse effects. The scientific evidence supports the use of NIR therapy for treatment of visual and neurological conditions, focusing on molecular and cellular mechanisms in eye diseases.
