Vegetation changes associated with release from cattle grazing in a WI calcareous fen

David Bart

Summary: A study in a Wisconsin calcareous fen revealed that areas long-protected from grazing had lower floristic quality and more woody plant encroachment compared to areas abandoned in 2011. The difference in vegetation quality between the two areas could not be explained by known edaphic and hydrologic drivers, suggesting that grazing release may have led to negative impacts on the ecosystem.

Rewetting does not return drained fen peatlands to their old selves

J. Kreyling et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of rewetting drained peatlands in restoring plant communities and ecosystem functions remains unclear, with persistent differences and higher variance observed in restored sites compared to near-natural peatlands. The rewetting of drained fen peatlands results in the establishment of tall wetland plants and long-lasting differences in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and land cover characteristics. Understanding the outcomes of rewetting efforts is crucial for improving planning and implementation of peatland restoration.

Predictors of Rare and Specialist Plant Occurrence in Midwestern Calcareous Fens

David Bart et al.

Summary: The study found that the occurrence and richness of rare and specialist plant species in calcareous fens are mainly influenced by groundwater saturation and nutrient availability, while historic land use, drainage, high-capacity wells, and high nitrogen levels are key factors limiting their presence and richness.
