Migration and transformation mechanism of phosphorus in waste activated sludge during anaerobic fermentation and hydrothermal conversion

Yan Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that controlling pH during the anaerobic fermentation process significantly influenced the release and transformation of phosphorus, with alkaline conditions facilitating the release of AP phosphorus and acidic conditions facilitating the release of NAIP and organic phosphorus. During the subsequent HTC process, NaOH promoted the transfer of phosphorus into the liquid phase, while Ca(OH)2 enhanced the incorporation of phosphorus into solid products and the transformation from NAIP to AP.

Understanding the mechanisms of biological struvite biomineralisation

Yirong Leng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms of struvite production through biomineralisation by five microorganisms, revealing that Bacillus pumilus and Idiomarina loihiensis produced bio-struvite through biologically controlled mineralisation. This finding indicates a potential method for recovering nutrients from wastewater streams.

Comprehensive comparison of acidic and alkaline anaerobic fermentations of waste activated sludge

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that alkaline fermentation of waste activated sludge increases biopolymer release and benefits VFAs production. However, the released organic matter in alkaline fermentation has low biodegradability, leading to increased nutrient loads in BNR effluent. Additionally, aluminum is more readily released in alkaline fermentation, impacting the filterability of fermented sludge.

Engineering principles and process designs for phosphorus recovery as struvite: A comprehensive review

Nageshwari Krishnamoorthy et al.

Summary: The global reliance on expensive phosphate fertilizers due to rising population and concerns over finite phosphorite reservoirs has led to researchers exploring opportunities for nutrient resource conservation and recovery. Nutrient recovery through struvite production aims to bridge the gap between wastewater treatment and agricultural productivity, with a focus on enhancing phosphorus recovery and addressing economic feasibility challenges associated with scaling up the process.
