The syn-rift tectono-stratigraphic record of rifted margins (Part I): Insights from the Alpine Tethys

Gianreto Manatschal et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a tectono-stratigraphic model for the former Alpine Tethys rift system and introduces a new 'building block (BB)' approach to better understand the evolution of this rift system. Through a detailed analysis of the syn-rift sequence, it is found that extension during the evolution from stretching to necking phase was asymmetric and controlled by in-sequence detachment faulting.

Supradetachment to rift basin transition recorded in continental to marine deposition; Paleogene Bandar Jissah Basin, NE Oman

Christopher Saebo Serck et al.

Summary: The Bandar Jissah Basin in southeast of Muscat, Oman, exhibits a transition from supradetachment to rift basin setting, with sediment sourced from the Semail Ophiolite and Saih Hatat window. The sedimentary facies belts in the basin include alluvial fan conglomerates, braidplain, mouth bar, shoreface and carbonate ramp deposits.

From rifting to hyperextension: Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous tectono-stratigraphy of the Porcupine Basin, Irish Atlantic Margin

Lewis Whiting et al.

Summary: Hyperextended basins are increasingly recognized as aborted basins created during continental break-up. This study of the Porcupine Basin in offshore west of Ireland reveals multiple rift segments with distinctive geometries and strain histories. The transition from hyperextension to post-rift subsidence in this basin is marked by unconformity-bounded marine sequences. Hyperextension may have left the basin susceptible to intra-plate stress changes, resulting in several unconformities within the post-rift fill.

Syn-rift sediment gravity flow deposition on a Late Jurassic fault-terraced slope, northern North Sea

Fabian Tillmans et al.

Summary: Structurally controlled bathymetry in rifts plays a significant role in influencing sediment routing pathways and depositional architecture of sediment gravity flow deposits. Research on deep-water sedimentary systems in rifts has shown that the regional basin margin to rift axis gradient predominantly controls the sediment routing, emphasizing the importance of hinterland catchments in the development of volumetrically significant deep-water syn-rift depositional systems.

The tectono-stratigraphic and magmatic evolution of conjugate rifted margins: Insights from the NW South China Sea

Peng Chao et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed analysis of the crustal architecture and tectono-stratigraphic evolution at the tip of the NW South China Sea V-shaped rift basin using high-quality reflection seismic sections. The study proposes qualitative and quantitative criteria to interpret critical rift events and suggests a kinematic restoration approach to quantify extension and strain rates. The findings provide new insights into the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the region and offer a potential new approach for analyzing seismic records across rifted margins.

Summary: The study explores the interaction between magmatic and extensional processes in the formation of rifted margins, presenting new insights into the characteristics and timing of magmatic additions based on high-resolution seismic profiles and drilling results. The research indicates a progressive increase in magmatic activity during rifting, highlighting the importance of understanding the magmatic budget in rifted margins.

The tectono-magmatic and subsidence evolution during lithospheric breakup in a salt-rich rifted margin: Insights from a 3D seismic survey from southern Gabon

Marie-Eva Epin et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the Ocean Continent Transition (OCT) of the southern Gabon margin, analyzing the geometrical relationships of salt deposition and its relative timing to breakup. The results suggest that salt deposition occurred during mantle exhumation, with various depths and timing across the area. The observations also indicate that the space created in the faulted outer trough was filled partly by autochthonous salt and possibly also by downslope flow.

Summary: This study investigates the role of a hyperextended rift system in the formation of the Basque-Cantabrian Pyrenees, discussing their current architecture and the inherited rift template. Through regional, crustal-scale cross-sections, the study provides geological and geophysical information and interpretations of the Central and Western Basque-Cantabrian Pyrenees, revealing different structural styles along the orogenic belt.

Tectono-Magmatic and stratigraphic evolution of final rifting and breakup: Evidence from the tip of the southwestern propagator in the south China sea

Pan Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tectono-sedimentary and magma evolution during final rifting and continental breakup along the SW conjugate margins of the South China Sea. The research concludes that the localization of deformation occurs simultaneously with magma emplacement, controlling continental breakup, and that the final rifting stage and breakup are not synchronous. The relationships observed in the SW-SCS differ significantly from classical models derived from the NAtlantic or the Alpine Tethys.

Gianreto Manatschal et al.

Summary: This study explores the interplay between inheritance and physical processes in geological system evolution, providing a conceptual framework for understanding rifts, rifted margins, and collisional orogens. It highlights the importance of inheritance in the initial stages of collision and its impact on orogenic complexity.
