Evaluation of Carbon Based Molecular Junctions as Practical Photosensors

Shailendra K. Saxena et al.

Summary: Molecular junctions with partially transparent top contacts can be used as photosensors, and the device performance is determined by the molecular layer inside. By evaluating molecular junctions containing nitroazobenzene (NAB) oligomers and two different aromatic molecules in bilayers, device parameters affecting photodetection performance were determined. The use of thick molecular layers can reduce dark current and noise, improving detection limits, while lower temperature enhances detection limits due to the lower activation energy of photocurrents compared to dark currents.

Quantum Circuit Rules for Molecular Electronic Systems: Where Are We Headed Based on the Current Understanding of Quantum Interference, Thermoelectric, and Molecular Spintronics Phenomena?

Abhishek Aggarwal et al.

Summary: This minireview discusses important aspects of quantum phenomena in single-molecule charge transport and the basic circuit rules devised for different molecular systems. While a universal circuit law for predicting charge transport properties has not been derived yet, having such a law could lead to the design of complex molecular devices with unique applications not possible with traditional silicon-based technologies. The discussion in this review suggests possible future research directions for deriving unified circuit laws to predict charge transport in complex single-molecule circuits.

Molecular Structure-(Thermo)electric Property Relationships in Single-Molecule Junctions and Comparisons with Single- and Multiple-Parameter Models

Masnun Naher et al.

Summary: The conductance of a series of 12 conjugated molecular wires, including 6 with ruthenium or platinum center, has been determined. The transmission through these wires is mainly through tunneling at the tail of the HOMO resonance near the middle of the HOMO-LUMO gap. The trends in molecular conductance across the series cannot be explained solely by single-parameter models, but require consideration of the complete molecular junction.

A review of oligo(arylene ethynylene) derivatives in molecular junctions

Luke J. O'Driscoll et al.

Summary: Oligo(arylene ethynylene) (OAE) derivatives are key molecules in the field of molecular electronics, known for their ease of synthesis and flexibility in functionalization. This review summarizes the breadth of research on OAE molecular wires, focusing on the structure-property relationships related to their electronic conductance. Additionally, the growing interest in the thermoelectric properties of OAE derivatives and their potential in organic thermoelectric devices is explored.

Single-molecule conductance of dibenzopentalenes: antiaromaticity and quantum interference

Maximilian Schmidt et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of antiaromaticity and destructive quantum interference on charge transport through dibenzo-[a,e]pentalene (DBP). It is found that 5,10-connectivity leads to high single-molecule conductance, while 2,7-connectivity results in low conductance due to destructive quantum interference. Comparison between 5,10-DBP, phenyl, and anthracene analogues shows that despite anthracene having a larger HOMO-LUMO gap, 5,10-DBP exhibits higher conductance due to unfavorable level alignment.
