Current methods and future directions in avian diet analysis

Brandon D. Hoenig et al.

Summary: Identifying avian diets is crucial in understanding their roles in ecosystems. However, the diversity in bird species and dietary habits poses challenges in accurately studying avian diet. Researchers need to be aware of the capabilities and limitations of various methods to ensure correct interpretation of results. Combining multiple techniques can lead to the most comprehensive findings in avian dietary research.

DNA metabarcoding reveals broadly overlapping diets in three sympatric North American hummingbirds

Austin R. Spence et al.

Summary: Hummingbirds show high dietary overlap in both invertebrate and plant resources, with few common families across individuals. Anna's Hummingbirds exhibit significantly higher invertebrate diet diversity compared to Black-chinned Hummingbirds in the same sites, but no differences were found in plant diet diversity among the 3 species. Urban hummingbirds have higher plant diet diversity than rural hummingbirds, with no effect of elevation on dietary richness.

Macroecological patterns of resource use in resident and migratory hummingbirds

Summary: This study examines how various factors influence floral resource use by hummingbirds in California, including species, migratory status, sex, geographic region, and local plant diversity. DNA metabarcoding was used to analyze diet diversity and composition, revealing significant effects of sex, sampling period, and migratory status on plant taxa present in fecal samples. Additionally, the study found high diet overlap between hummingbird species and less specialized plant-pollinator networks compared to null models.
