Jahan Zeb Khan et al.

Summary: This study conducted chemical characterization and source apportionment of PM1 and PM2.5 in a suburban area near the urban-industrial port city of Tianjin, China. The main sources identified were secondary aerosols, biomass burning, traffic emission, and coal combustion.

Tracking the changes of iron solubility and air pollutants traces as African dust transits the Atlantic in the Saharan dust outbreaks

Sergio Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study revealed variations in the solubility of iron from African dust outbreaks in different regions, with sources primarily from dust, heavy fuel oil combustion emissions, and atmospheric processing. During the westward transport across the Atlantic, the contribution of iron from dust decreased, while the contribution from atmospheric processing increased.

Impact of Desert Dust Events on the Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Alberto Dominguez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, this study found that inhalation of desert dust significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality, especially on the day of exposure and the following day. The results of the study show that exposure to every 10 mu g/m(3) of desert dust increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality by 2%.

Secondary aerosol formation in cloud serves as a vital source of aerosol in the troposphere

Jiannong Quan et al.

Summary: Analysis of aircraft measurements conducted over the North China Plain from 2007 to 2011 reveals that clouds play a significant role in the formation of secondary aerosols in the troposphere, leading to a significant increase in aerosol number concentration and sulfate content. In the presence of clouds, the conversion of SO2 to aerosols is accelerated, resulting in higher aerosol mass concentrations compared to non-cloudy conditions.

Coexistence of three liquid phases in individual atmospheric aerosol particles

Yuanzhou Huang et al.

Summary: Individual atmospheric particles can contain mixtures of primary organic aerosol (POA), secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA), with the potential to have three distinct liquid phases. The presence of these phases is influenced by the elemental oxygen-to-carbon (O:C) ratio of the SOA, impacting equilibration timescales and potential effects on cloud formation and atmospheric chemistry.

Impact of the variability in vertical separation between biomass burning aerosols and marine stratocumulus on cloud microphysical properties over the Southeast Atlantic

Siddhant Gupta et al.

Summary: The properties of marine stratocumulus clouds over the Southeast Atlantic Ocean are affected by the interaction between above-cloud biomass burning aerosols and cloud tops. Research flights during the NASA ORACLES field campaign in September 2016 observed different vertical separations between the aerosol layer and cloud tops, with implications on cloud droplet concentration, effective radius, liquid water content, and free-tropospheric humidity. Contact profiles, where aerosol layers were within 100m of cloud tops, showed higher cloud droplet concentration and lower effective radius compared to separated profiles. Additionally, the presence of biomass burning aerosols near cloud tops led to changes in droplet evaporation and droplet nucleation which could impact precipitation rates and cloud transitions.
