Control of particulate nitrate air pollution in China

Shixian Zhai et al.

Summary: The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in China decreased by 30-50% from 2013 to 2018 due to emission controls, but the nitrate component did not decrease effectively. Increased particulate nitrate concentration during winter haze pollution events is attributed to the particulate fraction transitioning from gaseous nitric acid. Reducing ammonia emissions is suggested as an effective method to decrease the nitrate component of fine particulate matter pollution in the North China Plain.

Predicting the Nonlinear Response of PM2.5 and Ozone to Precursor Emission Changes with a Response Surface Model

James T. Kelly et al.

Summary: The study examined the effectiveness of emission reductions in reducing PM2.5 and ozone concentrations using the pf-RSM model applied to CMAQ simulations. Results show that NOx emissions reductions were more effective than other pollutants, and NH3 reductions had varying effects on nitrate and SOA concentrations. Further research is needed on SOA formation under low NH3 emissions conditions.

Non-linear response of PM2.5 to changes in NOx and NH3 emissions in the Po basin (Italy): consequences for air quality plans

Philippe Thunis et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the Po basin in Europe, analyzing the sensitivity of PM2.5 concentration to NOx and NH3 emissions, finding that reduction in NOx emissions in NOx-rich areas may lead to a slight increase in PM2.5 levels. This process could have contributed to the absence of a significant decrease in PM2.5 concentration during the COVID-19 lockdowns in many European cities.

Recommendations on benchmarks for numerical air quality model applications in China - Part 1: PM2.5 and chemical species

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: Numerical air quality models have become more commonly used in China in recent years, but their performance can vary due to differences in model configurations. Factors such as emission inventory, grid resolution, and aerosol- and gas-phase chemistry have been identified as top influencers on the performance of PM2.5 AQMs in China.
