Flares in open clusters with K2: II. Pleiades, Hyades, Praesepe, Ruprecht 147, and M 67

Ekaterina Ilin et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the flaring activity of independently age-dated main sequence stars using optical light curves obtained by the Kepler satellite. The research confirmed 3844 flares on high probability open cluster members, covering a mass range from Sun-like stars to mid-M dwarfs.

Gaia Early Data Release 3: Photometric content and validation

M. Riello et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the photometric content in Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3), describing the input data, algorithms, processing, and validation of results. Significant improvements were made in the processing, particularly in the preprocessing and calibration of blue and red photometer data. The overall quality of calibrated mean photometry in Gaia EDR3 is superior to DR2 for all bands.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Rotation and Lithium Confirmation of a 500 pc Halo for the Open Cluster NGC 2516*

L. G. Bouma et al.

Summary: Recent analyses of Gaia data have identified diffuse stellar populations surrounding nearby open clusters. The study focused on NGC 2516 and found that the halo stars in the cluster are the same age as the core stars, with higher lithium abundance and a larger population. This suggests a new paradigm where the halos of open clusters are often more populous than their cores, with implications for spectroscopic survey targeting and planet searches around young stars.

Evolution of the Exoplanet Size Distribution: Forming Large Super-Earths Over Billions of Years

Trevor J. David et al.

Summary: The radius valley, a phenomenon in the size distribution of small, close-in exoplanets, is believed to be a signature of planetary atmospheric loss. The study shows that the radius valley among younger planets is shifted to smaller radii compared to older planets, suggesting a timescale of gigayears for atmospheric loss. Additionally, planets with rocky compositions may correspond to the unrepresented sizes in younger systems.

MESA Models with Magnetic Braking

Seth Gossage et al.

Summary: Two magnetic braking models are implemented in MESA for use in the MIST stellar model grids, but the detailed physics behind magnetic braking are uncertain. While each model tested can reproduce aspects of the data, neither fully accounts for the observations, suggesting the need for further improvement. The study also indicates a missing mass dependency in these braking models to better match the rotation periods observed in clusters older than 1 Gyr.

Weakened magnetic braking supported by asteroseismic rotation rates of Kepler dwarfs

Oliver J. Hall et al.

Summary: Studies using asteroseismic rotation rates suggest that weakened magnetic braking may occur roughly halfway through a main sequence star's lifetime. The Bayesian mixture model showed that the weakened magnetic braking scenario was 98.4% more likely for the stellar ensemble studied.

Testing the Limits of Precise Subgiant Characterization with APOGEE and Gaia: Opening a Window to Unprecedented Astrophysical Studies

Diego Godoy-Rivera et al.

Summary: Thoroughly characterized subgiant stars on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram are important for astrophysical studies, particularly in the context of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. In this work, stellar properties of 347 subgiants were inferred using classical constraints and asteroseismic data sets, providing insights into mass and age determination. The study also revealed discrepancies in extinction estimation using 3D maps for nearby stars.

Surface Rotation and Photometric Activity for Kepler Targets. II. G and F Main-sequence Stars and Cool Subgiant Stars

A. R. G. Santos et al.

Summary: The study analyzed Kepler data of 132,921 main-sequence F and G stars and late subgiant stars, identifying rotation-period candidates and selecting reliable rotation periods using a machine-learning algorithm. The research also found that hotter stars generally rotate faster and that the photometric activity of main-sequence G stars varies with increasing effective temperature.

Stellar age dependence of the nonextensive magnetic braking index: A test for the open cluster αPer

Daniel B. De Freitas

Summary: By using a generalized function of the stellar spin-down law, this study investigated the age dependence of the magnetic braking index (q) in open clusters. It was found that the values of q remained slightly constant around 1.36 and 1.38 across different mass bins. The results suggest that the mechanism controlling the rotational decay of stars in open clusters does not depend on the increment of time.

Two Young Planetary Systems around Field Stars with Ages between 20 and 320 Myr from TESS

George Zhou et al.

Summary: Researchers reported the discovery and validation of two planetary systems with ages less than or similar to 300 million years, observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The G star TOI-251 and K star TOI-942 host planets of various sizes and periods, with characteristics indicating their young age. The study suggests that TESS has the potential to contribute significantly to understanding the properties of planets in relation to their age.
