Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Ultra-wideband, Multiepoch Radio Study of the First Discovered Main-sequence Radio Pulse Emitter CU Vir

Barnali Das et al.

Summary: This study presents the first ultra-wideband investigation of the star CU Vir, revealing the presence of ECME with different circular polarizations and inferring the cutoff frequency of ECME. Observations also suggest that the contrasting behavior of the star at different frequencies may be attributed to propagation effects, changing magnetic field topology, or an additional ECME engine.

The ASAS-SN catalogue of variable stars IX: The spectroscopic properties of Galactic variable stars

T. Jayasinghe et al.

Summary: The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae provides V-band light curves for millions of sources and identified hundreds of thousands of variables, with discoveries mainly in the Southern hemisphere. Spectroscopic information from various telescopes is used to study the physical and chemical properties of these variables, revealing patterns related to metallicity, rotational velocity, and abundance.

Estimating Distances from Parallaxes. V. Geometric and Photogeometric Distances to 1.47 Billion Stars in Gaia Early Data Release 3

C. A. L. Bailer-Jones et al.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

Magnetic field and activity phenomena of the K2 dwarf V471 Tau

B. Zaire et al.

Summary: In this study, spectropolarimetric data of the pre-cataclysmic variable binary system V471 Tau were analyzed to investigate the differential rotation of the K2 dwarf. Significant fluctuations in surface shear were detected between two observational campaigns, with larger amplitudes of variation seen in the K2 dwarf of V471 Tau compared to the single-star analogue AB Dor. The results suggest that exotic forms of similar phenomena based on dynamo processes within the convective zone of the K2 star may be responsible for the observed orbital period fluctuations, rather than the traditional Applegate mechanism.

X-Ray Superflares from Pre-main-sequence Stars: Flare Energetics and Frequency

Konstantin V. Getman et al.

Summary: Solar-type stars exhibit high levels of magnetic activity during their early convective pre-main-sequence phase. The study identifies and analyzes a sample of X-ray superflares and megaflares from young stars, with properties indistinguishable for disk-bearing and diskless stars. Megaflares from solar-mass stars contribute significantly to total PMS X-ray energetics and may have important astrophysical effects.

Slingshot prominences: a hidden mass loss mechanism

Rose F. P. Waugh et al.

Summary: This study investigates stellar prominences around rapidly rotating young M-dwarfs and finds that much of the prominence mass may be invisible to observation. Prominence formation may be controlled by the magnetic field, and on the observed M-dwarf V374 Peg, visible prominence mass is only around 10% of the total mass supported. Prominence ejection may significantly contribute to stellar wind loss and spin-down, with planets in equatorial orbits potentially experiencing intermittent enhancements of the stellar wind due to prominence ejections.

Even More Rapidly Rotating Pre-main-sequence M Dwarfs with Highly Structured Light Curves: An Initial Survey in the Lower Centaurus-Crux and Upper Centaurus-Lupus Associations

John Stauffer et al.

Summary: Recent studies have identified a new type of periodic photometric variability in mid-M dwarfs, characterized by broad flux dips or multiple arcuate structures not explainable by traditional mechanisms. These features have been found in members of Upper Sco, Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL), and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC), with no significant differences in characteristics between them. The physical mechanism behind this variability, possibly related to differing colors in rapidly rotating mid-M dwarfs, remains unknown and requires further investigation.

Time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of M dwarf flare star YZ Canis Minoris with OISTER and TESS: Blue asymmetry in the H alpha line during the non-white light flare

Hiroyuki Maehara et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the M-type flare star YZ CMi within the OISTER collaborations during the TESS observation period. The study found a blue asymmetry in one of the H alpha flares associated with white-light flares on YZ CMi, suggesting upward flows of chromospheric cool plasma even without detectable red/near-infrared continuum brightening. Estimated mass and kinetic energy of the upward-moving material were comparable to expectations from empirical relations for stellar flares and solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The estimated kinetic energy for the non-white-light flare on YZ CMi was smaller than expected from the relation for solar CMEs, possibly due to differences in velocity between CMEs and prominence eruptions.
