New eclipsing binaries with mercury-manganese stars

O. Kochukhov et al.

Summary: By studying eclipse variability in mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars, this study identifies several interesting objects requiring further investigation, including the confirmation of the longest-period eclipsing HgMn star. Additionally, eccentric systems showing heartbeat variability are reported for the first time among five newly discovered eclipsing binaries.

Estimating Distances from Parallaxes. V. Geometric and Photogeometric Distances to 1.47 Billion Stars in Gaia Early Data Release 3

C. A. L. Bailer-Jones et al.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

Discovery of new mercury-manganese stars, including a fast rotator

J. F. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The origin of mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars remains poorly understood. A study identified 13 new HgMn stars and compiled a list of 46 confirmed ones. Among them, HD145842 with its high rotation speed challenges current models.

V680 Mon - a young mercury-manganese star in an eclipsing heartbeat system

Ernst Paunzen et al.

Summary: Chemically peculiar stars in eclipsing binary systems, such as the HgMn star in the BD+09 1467 = V680 Mon system studied here, provide valuable insights into stellar parameters and evolutionary status. The system is identified as a rare `heartbeat star', with updated ephemeris and binary system parameters derived from photometric observations and modelling with the ELISA code. This fifth known eclipsing CP3 star, potentially a member of the open cluster NGC 2264, offers a unique opportunity for detailed studies and understanding of CP3 star peculiarities.

V772 Cas: an ellipsoidal HgMn star in an eclipsing binary

O. Kochukhov et al.

Summary: V772 Cas is a rare example of a magnetic chemically peculiar star in an eclipsing binary system, with clear eclipses and out-of-eclipse variations. High-resolution spectroscopy reveals chemical peculiarities typical of non-magnetic HgMn stars. Modelling of the system shows that the out-of-eclipse brightness variation is explained by the ellipsoidal shape of the asynchronously rotating primary component, making it the first HgMn star with such definitively identified variability.

TESS survey of rotational and pulsational variability of mercury-manganese stars

O. Kochukhov et al.

Summary: Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars are a unique type of stars characterized by large overabundances of heavy elements, slow rotation, and frequent membership in binary systems. Observations show that most HgMn stars have star-spots on their surfaces, with some exhibiting fast rotation and multiperiodic pulsations.

The NASA High-Resolution Speckle Interferometric Imaging Program: Validation and Characterization of Exoplanets and Their Stellar Hosts

Steve B. Howell et al.

Summary: NASA has provided an observational program aimed at obtaining high-resolution imaging for the exoplanet community since 2008, in order to validate and characterize exoplanets and their stellar environments, and search for life in the Universe. Their speckle interferometry program is crucial for identifying nearby stellar companions and deriving accurate exoplanet and stellar parameters.
