He-shell flashes on the surface of oxygen-neon white dwarfs

Yunlang Guo et al.

Summary: This article investigates the He-shell flashes on the surface of ONe WDs by studying the long-term evolution with various constant mass-accretion rates. It found that the mass-retention efficiency increases with the ONe WD mass and the mass-accretion rate, while the nova cycle duration and the ignition mass decrease with the ONe WD mass and the mass-accretion rate. The results can be applied in future binary population synthesis studies of AIC events.

New Insights into Classical Novae

Laura Chomiuk et al.

Summary: Classical novae are nonterminal, thermonuclear eruptions on white dwarfs in binary systems. The recent discovery of GeV gamma rays from Galactic novae has shown the complexity of novae and their importance as laboratories for studying shocks and particle acceleration. The mass ejection processes of novae are poorly understood, leading to the production of gamma-ray-producing shocks internal to the nova ejecta which significantly contribute to the bolometric luminosity of novae.

Helium enrichment during classical nova outbursts

Yunlang Guo et al.

Summary: Nova outbursts are important for the chemical evolution of Galaxy, and the He-mixing process significantly affects the mass fraction of H and He in nova ejecta, as well as influences the duration and mass of nova cycles. The nuclear energy generation rate of p-p chains decreases with He-mixing during nova outbursts, while the CNO-cycle increases. This study develops a He-mixing meter that can estimate the He-mixing fraction in classical nova systems.
