Rubidium in Barium stars

M. P. Roriz et al.

Summary: Barium (Ba) stars show atmospheric signs of the slow neutron-capture mechanism from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, with rubidium (Rb) playing a key role in the s-process diagnostic. The study of 180 Ba stars reveals that Rb abundances are consistent with s-process models from low-mass AGB stars, indicating the main neutron source is the C-13(alpha,n)O-16 reaction in the companions of these Ba stars. Former IR/OH massive AGB star companions were not found in this study.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: a new approach to chemically characterising young open clusters II. Abundances of the neutron-capture elements Cu, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, and Ce

M. Baratella et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the chemical compositions of young open clusters, finding anomalies such as sub-solar iron content and super-solar abundances of certain species. The research confirms super-solar values for barium in young clusters, while copper levels remain similar to solar values. The study suggests that elements like strontium, zirconium, lanthanum, and cerium may serve as better tracers of s-process in young clusters, and calls for further observations to address the Ba puzzle.

Heavy elements in barium stars

M. P. Roriz et al.

Summary: A new study presents elemental abundances for neutron-capture elements in 180 barium giant stars, revealing discrepancies in La abundances compared to previous literature. The data set shows an overabundance of neutron-capture elements in these stars, but behaves similarly to field stars in some aspects. While model predictions match observations in certain ratios, discrepancies are found in other ratios, requiring further investigation into neutron capture models.

The formation of barium giants via mass accretion in binary systems

Richard J. Stancliffe

Summary: We examine the composition of barium stars in the context of mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion. Accretion of AGB ejecta onto low-mass companions forms typical 2.5M barium stars, with higher accretion masses required for lower mass companions. Our models fit observed properties of 74 barium giants, with most objects best fit with ejecta from 2.5M or 3M AGB stars. Accretion efficiency is towards the upper limit found in hydrodynamical simulations, with no strong correlations found between orbital period and accretion mass for the 18 stars with reported periods.

Parallax Systematics and Photocenter Motions of Benchmark Eclipsing Binaries in Gaia EDR3

Keivan G. Stassun et al.

Summary: Analyses of parallaxes observed by the Gaia satellite have shown significant improvements in systematics over time, with global systematics in parallaxes no longer statistically significant for a sample of benchmark eclipsing binaries. The Renormalized Unit Weight Error (RUWE) statistic is highly sensitive to unresolved companions and photocenter motion of binaries, suggesting that slightly elevated RUWE values may indicate unresolved binaries and can predict photocenter motion accurately.
