Detection of an Atmosphere on a Rocky Exoplanet

Mark R. Swain et al.

Summary: The research team detected an atmosphere on the rocky exoplanet GJ 1132 b, similar to Earth in size and density. By analyzing the atmospheric transmission spectrum, they found spectral signatures of aerosol scattering, HCN, and CH4, suggesting that the planet may have lost its original gas envelope.

Disequilibrium Chemistry in Exoplanet Atmospheres Observed with the Hubble Space Telescope

Gael M. Roudier et al.

Summary: The literature on exoplanet atmospheric disequilibrium chemistry theory is extensive, but observationally it is still lacking. In a study of 62 Hubble Space Telescope exoplanet transit spectra, it was found that about half of the atmospheres exhibit disequilibrium chemistry, suggesting its importance in determining the composition of exoplanet atmospheres. While very hot atmospheres tend to prefer equilibrium chemistry, there is a preference for disequilibrium in the 1200-1800 K temperature range, possibly due to the role of UV-augmented thermochemistry.

Detection of Aerosols at Microbar Pressures in an Exoplanet Atmosphere

Raissa Estrela et al.

Summary: Observational evidence of aerosols existing in the atmosphere of the warm sub-Saturn WASP-69b at around 1 microbar pressures has been presented, indicating the potential presence of haze in exoplanet atmospheres. The transmission spectrum shows a wavelength-dependent slope induced by aerosol scattering covering 11 scale heights of spectral modulation, with modeling based on Jupiter's haze-density profile supporting these findings. These results are consistent with theoretical expectations suggesting haze can exist at microbar pressures in exoplanet atmospheres, drawing on extensive studies of haze in our solar system.
