Mitigation of marine toxins by interactions with bacteria: The case of okadaic acid and tetrodotoxin

Francesco Martelli et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of lactic acid bacteria and Paracoccus spp. to reduce OA and TTX toxins, finding different mechanisms of action among different bacterial species. Some lactic acid bacteria were able to significantly reduce toxin levels in their viable state, while Paracoccus spp. showed a reduction in toxin levels in a cell-free extract form.

DSP Toxin Distribution across Organs in Mice after Acute Oral Administration

M. Carmen Louzao et al.

Summary: Okadaic acid and its structural analogs DTX1 and DTX2 are marine lipophilic phycotoxins that can cause diarrheic shellfish poisoning. Studies found a dose-dependency in gastrointestinal absorption of these toxins and a different toxicokinetic pathway between them. The highest toxin concentration was detected in the stomach 24 hours post-administration, providing information for human safety assessment.

Nod1 promotes colorectal carcinogenesis by regulating the immunosuppressive functions of tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells

Charles Maisonneuve et al.

Summary: The pioneering studies in the early 1980s indicated that bacterial peptidoglycan-derived muramyl peptides (MPs) have dual functions of either stimulation or immunosuppression depending on the chronicity of exposure. This study demonstrates the immunosuppressive potential of Nod1, the bacterial sensor of diaminopimelic acid (DAP)-containing MPs, in reprogramming macrophages and inducing myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to maintain their immunosuppressive activity, ultimately promoting tumor progression in colorectal cancer.

Serotonin involvement in okadaic acid-induced diarrhoea in vivo

M. Carmen Louzao et al.

Summary: Ingestion of contaminated shellfish can lead to diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning, with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The toxins in shellfish are Ser/Thr phosphatase inhibitors, potentially affecting the nervous system. Further studies suggest a possible involvement of serotonin in OA-induced poisoning.
