Association of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Level with COVID-19-Related in-Hospital Mortality: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Mehmet Guven et al.

Summary: Severe vitamin D deficiency is more common in patients with COVID-19 and may play a significant role in worsening the prognosis of these patients. However, the 25(OH)D level was not observed to effect COVID-19-related in-hospital mortality.

Vitamin D insufficiency as a potential culprit in critical COVID-19 patients

Ruhul Munshi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that serum vitamin D levels may be associated with the prognosis of COVID-19. Diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency could assist in assessing patients' potential for developing severe COVID-19, and appropriate preventative and/or therapeutic interventions may improve COVID-19 outcomes.

Effect of a Single High Dose of Vitamin D3 on Hospital Length of Stay in Patients With Moderate to Severe COVID-19 A Randomized Clinical Trial

Igor H. Murai et al.

Summary: The study found that a single high dose of vitamin D-3 did not significantly reduce hospital length of stay among hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The findings do not support the use of a high dose of vitamin D-3 for treatment of moderate to severe COVID-19.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with COVID-19 positivity and severity of the disease

Mustafa Demir et al.

Summary: This study found that in COVID-19 patients, a high percentage had vitamin D levels below 30 ng/ml, especially severe deficiency. Patients with higher levels of vitamin D had lower levels of D-dimer and CRP, fewer affected lung segments, and shorter hospital stays. Elevated vitamin D levels may reduce COVID-19 PCR positivity, D-dimer and CRP levels, and alleviate the severity of COVID-19.

Association between vitamin D supplementation or serum vitamin D level and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 including clinical course, morbidity and mortality outcomes? A systematic review

Amy Grove et al.

Summary: This systematic review critically assessed studies on the association between vitamin D supplementation or serum vitamin D level and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19. The review found conflicting results and no robust evidence to support a negative association between vitamin D and COVID-19. Further research and randomized controlled trials are needed to determine the potential relationship between vitamin D levels and the severity of symptoms or mortality due to COVID-19.

Vitamin D status and outcomes for hospitalised older patients with COVID-19

Vadir Baktash et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the importance of vitamin D deficiency in older patients with COVID-19, finding a potential association between vitamin D deficiency and worse outcomes in COVID-19 cases among older adults, without an increased mortality rate.

Vitamin D and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): rapid evidence review

Zahra Raisi-Estabragh et al.

Summary: The current studies on the relationship between vitamin D and COVID-19 are mostly small and observational, with a risk of bias and reverse causality. Based on existing data, there is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

Vitamin D Status in Hospitalized Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Jose L. Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that hospitalized COVID-19 patients have significantly lower serum 25OHD levels than population-based controls, and the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is higher in COVID-19 patients. However, no relationship was found between vitamin D concentrations or deficiency and the severity of the disease at this time.
