Association between body composition at term equivalent age and Bayley scores at 2 years in preterm infants

Jenny Bua et al.

Summary: This study found a correlation between body composition of preterm infants at term equivalent age and their Bayley composite motor and language scores at 2 years of corrected age. Infants with higher fat-free mass (FFM) z-scores performed better in language and motor abilities, indicating the importance of body composition in early developmental outcomes.

Perspective: Nutritional Status as a Biological Variable (NABV): Integrating Nutrition Science into Basic and Clinical Research and Care

Daniel J. Raiten et al.

Summary: The field of nutrition has shifted from identifying important nutrients to focusing on applying that knowledge to promote health and prevent disease. Understanding the complexities of nutrient functions in a global health context emphasizes the importance of considering nutritional status as a biological variable, which is involved in all aspects of health and disease. This expanded view of nutrition will guide future research towards precision and evidence-based standards of health care and public health programs.
