The influence of the backing plate materials on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction spot extrusion brazing of AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy and Brass sheets

Moslem Paidar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of backing plate materials on microstructural and mechanical features during friction spot extrusion brazing. Results showed that changing the backing plate material significantly affected the microstructure of the reaction layers at the interface of the joint. The use of a Zn interlayer was found to restrict the creation of deleterious intermetallic compounds at the interface. Additionally, welds produced by steel backing plates showed a 35% increase in fracture load compared to those produced by copper backing plates, attributed to good metallurgical bonding and a larger amount of Al-Zn eutectic phase in the brazed zone.

Influence of shoulder diameter on interfacial microstructure and mechanical behavior in dieless friction stir riveting of CP-Copper to 321 stainless steel

Guangli Fan et al.

Summary: This study found that increasing the tool shoulder diameter can enhance the temperature and tensile-shear load of the joints, and improve the metallurgical bonding of materials. A wider tool shoulder diameter helps prevent sheet bulging in the riveted zone and reduces the occurrence of defects.

Weldability and mechanical properties of AA5083-H112 aluminum alloy and pure copper dissimilar friction spot extrusion welding-brazing

M. Paidar et al.

Summary: The friction spot extrusion welding-brazing (FSEW-B) process was used to join AA5083-H112 aluminum alloy and pure Cu with the help of a Zn interlayer to improve mechanical properties of the dissimilar joint. The data showed that FSEW-B eliminated keyhole defects and reduced brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) at the Cu/Al interface, resulting in improved strength and ductility of the weld sample.

Influence of material positioning during modified friction stir clinching brazing of Al/Zn/Cu welds

Moslem Paidar et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of material positioning on the metallurgical and mechanical properties of Cu/Al and Al/Cu MFSCB joints with the use of Zn as interlayer. The results showed that material positioning significantly affected the quality of the joints, with a significant improvement in the performance of the joint when pure copper was placed on top of AA5083 in condition #1.

Interfacial properties of friction stir lap welded 430/304 stainless steels using Cu interlayer

Guolin Guo et al.

Summary: Friction stir lap welding of dissimilar stainless steels 304 and 430 was successfully achieved using a Cu interlayer, where different metallurgical processes were utilized at the interfaces. The Cu interlayer promoted atom diffusion and reduced interfacial stress, leading to a significant improvement in joint performance.

Dieless Friction Stir Extrusion-Brazing (DFSE-B) of AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy to Copper with Zn interlayer

M. Paidar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the improved load-bearing performance of dissimilar AA2024-T3/copper joint using Dieless Friction Stir Extrusion-Brazing (DFSE-B), compared with Friction Stir Spot Welding-Brazing (FSSW-B). The DFSE-B process suppresses flow-induced defects, resulting in enhanced tensile-shear load and toughness due to the absence of tool-induced keyhole and mechanical interlocking of softer Al alloy into harder Cu alloy. DFSE-B proves to be a suitable welding alternative for reactive metals.

Moslem Paidar et al.

Summary: The weldability of AA2024-T3 and AZ31 Mg alloys was investigated using two processes, MFSC-B and PFSSB. The MFSC-B process showed better material flow and higher dislocation density, leading to improved tensile/shear failure load. Therefore, it is recommended for dissimilar joining of Mg and Al alloys.

Friction welding of dissimilar joints copper-stainless steel pipe consist of 0.06 wall thickness to pipe diameter ratio

Hardik D. Vyas et al.

Summary: The study found that dissimilar friction welding between ETP-Cu and SS of grade 304 L can produce strong joints with excellent leak-proof ability and strength, with noticeable microstructure changes on the Cu side but not on the SS side. The continuity of welding was observed at the periphery of the pipe configuration with the presence of a continuous reaction layer containing Cu and Fe elements at the joint interface.
