Modelling chronic toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics of copper in mussels considering ionoregulatory homeostasis and oxidative stress

T. T. Yen Le et al.

Summary: Chronic toxicity of copper at sublethal levels is associated with ionoregulatory disturbance and oxidative stress. A toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model was used to analyze how copper inhibits NKA activity by reducing the number of functional pump sites and the limited Cu-bound NKA turnover rate. The model simulation consistently shows nonsignificant differences in LPO and GST activity at two exposure levels.

Modelling copper toxicokinetics in the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, under chronic exposures at various pH and sodium concentrations

T. T. Yen Le et al.

Summary: The stenohaline zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, is highly sensitive to the ionic composition of its aquatic environment. Research on waterborne copper uptake and accumulation in zebra mussels has shown significant variations under different environmental conditions. The study also revealed the impact of pH and sodium concentration on copper uptake, with kinetic modeling predicting accumulation based on these factors.
