Interactions between a planktivorous fish and planktonic microcrustaceans mediated by the biomass of aquatic macrophytes

Barbara Angelio Quirino et al.

Summary: Habitat complexity plays an important role in mediating predator-prey relationships by affecting the availability of prey and diet compositions of predators. The study found that different levels of aquatic macrophyte biomass influenced the abundance and richness of microcrustaceans, as well as the diet selection of a planktivorous fish species. Prey characteristics such as size, escape ability, and energy value also played a role in determining the vulnerability of microcrustaceans to predation by fish in different habitat structures.
