Phylogeographic study of the West Australian freshwater mussel, Westralunio carteri, uncovers evolutionarily significant units that raise new conservation concerns

M. W. Klunzinger et al.

Summary: The freshwater mussel Westralunio carteri in southwestern Australia is a vulnerable species with complex taxonomic and population genetic history. The study identified three evolutionarily significant units and supported the idea of dividing it into two distinct species based on different geographic ranges. The phylogeographic patterns confirm the historical separation of Western and Southern paleo-basins, as well as the isolation of the south-western extremity of the region.

Freshwater mussels in Mediterranean-climate regions: Species richness, conservation status, threats, and Conservation Actions Needed

Justin Aaron Benson et al.

Summary: The five global Mediterranean-climate regions are experiencing alarming rates of freshwater biodiversity loss, with freshwater mussels being one of the most threatened faunal groups. In the Mediterranean-climate regions, med-mussel species are almost twice as likely to be imperilled and require more conservation actions compared to non-med mussels. Urgent efforts are needed to address the threats facing med-mussels and enhance conservation measures in these regions.

Mitogenomic phylogeny and fossil-calibrated mutation rates for all F- and M-type mtDNA genes of the largest freshwater mussel family, the Unionidae (Bivalvia)

Alexandra Zieritz et al.

Summary: The Unionidae serve as an excellent model taxon for studying freshwater diversity drivers, but the lack of a comprehensive phylogeny and mutation rates for Southeast Asian taxa hinders phylogeographic studies. By analyzing mitogenomes of several genera within the Contradentini+Rectidentini clade, researchers were able to estimate substitution rates and infer evolutionary relationships. The study revealed the early Cretaceous divergence of clades Contradentini+Rectidentini and Lamprotulini+Pseudodontini+Gonideini, with most gonideine tribes originating during the early Paleogene. Substitution rates were found to be comparable to previously published data for certain Unionidae and Margaritiferidae species.

Reconstructing hotspots of genetic diversity from glacial refugia and subsequent dispersal in Italian common toads (Bufo bufo)

Andrea Chiocchio et al.

Summary: The study investigated the genetic diversity of the common toad Bufo bufo along the Italian peninsula and found that glacial refugia played a crucial role in maintaining levels and patterns of genetic diversity across glacial-interglacial cycles. Genetic admixture was identified as the significant predictor of population genetic diversity levels.

A 'big data' approach to global freshwater mussel diversity (Bivalvia: Unionoida), with an updated checklist of genera and species

Daniel L. Graf et al.

Summary: This review updates the previously published checklist of freshwater mussel species and genera to reflect new data and research findings, identifying a total of 4,988 available species-group level nominal species representing 958 valid species in 192 genera worldwide, an increase of 118 species since 2007. Current patterns of species richness and changes in the number of recognized species over time are discussed.

Don't move a mussel? Parasite and disease risk in conservation action

Joshua Brian et al.

Summary: Freshwater mussels are highly endangered and conservationists often use translocation or captive breeding procedures to support them, but there is little consideration of the risk of pathogen transmission during these processes. More research and action is needed to prevent the spread of diseases when conserving vulnerable mussel populations.
