Coinfection with two strains of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae and Vibrio harveyi in cage farmed cobia, Rachycentron canadum (Linnaeus, 1766)

Krupesha Sharma Sulumane Ramachandra et al.

Summary: In cases of coinfections, multiple pathogens can induce distinct pathologies, with Vibrio harveyi and Photobacterium damselae causing different lesions in cobia. Natural coinfection resulted in severe lesions, while experimental infection mainly showed internal organ congestion. Enzyme activity analysis indicated the high pathogenicity of V. harveyi, and the MAR index suggested low antibiotic contamination risk in the pathogens.

Sea lice Lepeophtheirus spinifer, Tuxophorus sp. and Caligus sp. infections on wild-caught queenfish Scomberoides commersonnianus from northern Australia

B. K. Diggles et al.

Summary: The study reviewed ectoparasites of queenfish in northern Australia and found that queenfish near Gladstone Harbour predominantly suffered from infections of the parasite L. spinifer, leading to skin lesions, while queenfish from the Northern Territory and other areas in Queensland had lower infection rates and intensities. The presence of heavy L. spinifer infections, combined with poor water quality and direct exposure to contaminated dredge spoil and blooms of cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula, can be associated with cutaneous disease in wild-caught queenfish.

Emamectin Benzoate Treatment of Hybrid Grouper Infected With Sea Lice in Hong Kong

Sophie St-Hilaire et al.

Summary: The study found that Emamectin benzoate (EB) was effective in reducing sea lice infections in hybrid groupers in saltwater net-pen sites in Hong Kong, with a noticeable reduction observed from the last day of treatment to 14 days after the final EB treatment. However, there was a significant variation in EB concentrations in fish on the last day of treatment, indicating uneven distribution of medication in daily rations may have impacted the treatment response. Preliminary evidence suggests that EB could be a potential treatment for sea lice in Hong Kong and other regions of Southeast Asia.

Catastrophic mass mortalities caused by Photobacterium damselae affecting farmed marine fish from Deeba Triangle, Egypt

Alaa Eldin Eissa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the causes of mass fish kills in the Deeba Triangle in Egypt and found that bacterial infections and poor water quality were the main factors. It suggested that adopting strict biosecurity strategies will be crucial in preventing future episodes of mass kills.

First evidence of fish nocardiosis in Mexico caused by Nocardia seriolae in farmed red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus, Linnaeus)

Rodolfo Enrique del Rio-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: An outbreak of ulcerative granulomatous disease in red drum cultured in a commercial marine farm in Campeche Bay Mexico was caused by Nocardia, a type of filamentous bacteria. This is the first report of piscine nocardiosis in Mexico and the first detection of the disease in red drum species. The pathogen was definitively identified and characterized through PCR and gene sequencing methods.
