Use of alternative protein sources for fishmeal replacement in the diet of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Part I: effects of poultry by-product meal and soybean meal on growth, feed utilization, and health

Xinyu Li et al.

Summary: The study found that including 15% fishmeal protein in the diet is sufficient for the growth of largemouth bass, but may impact their intestinal, skin, eye, and liver health. Adjusting the levels of methionine and taurine in the diet, as well as reducing possible antinutritional factors in fishmeal replacements like soybean meal, could help prevent black skin syndrome.

Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs) Generated by Anaerobic Digestion Serve as Feedstock for Freshwater and Marine Oleaginous Microorganisms to Produce Biodiesel and Added-Value Compounds

Alok Patel et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of microalgae and thraustochytrids to produce lipids from volatile fatty acids generated from food waste via anaerobic digestion. Freshwater microalgae were found to produce lipids similar to soybean and jatropha oils, while marine strains showed promise in producing high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids.

Animal Protein Sources as a Substitute for Fishmeal in Aquaculture Diets: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Rendani Luthada-Raswiswi et al.

Summary: Due to the increased prices of fishmeal, researchers are seeking alternatives and have found that the use of insects, terrestrial by-products, and fishery by-products has some limitations, but replacing fishmeal with animal protein sources has a positive impact on the growth parameters of different species and sizes of fish.

Anaerobic digestion of organic waste: Recovery of value-added and inhibitory compounds from liquid fraction of digestate

Summary: This study reviews various methods for separating valuable products and inhibitory substances from the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestion, including their performance, applicability, limitations, and roadmaps for improvement. In-situ extraction is seen as a promising approach with good potential to overcome barriers for continuous production. Prospect and challenges of future development are further analyzed based on in-situ extraction and economics.
