Production of market-size European strain Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in land-based freshwater closed containment aquaculture systems

Curtis Crouse et al.

Summary: Interest in land-based farms using recirculating aquaculture systems for market-size Atlantic salmon continues to grow. This research on European-sourced Atlantic salmon reared in land-based aquaculture systems confirmed the feasibility of growing Atlantic salmon to market-size, but controlling early maturation of diploid salmon remains a challenge. All-female groups generally grew faster than mixed-sex groups, with early maturation rates varying among different groups.
