Recent trends of supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle: Bibliometric analysis and research review

Aofang Yu et al.

Summary: The supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle has been widely applied in various heat sources in recent decades due to its compact structure and high efficiency. Analysis shows that the United States is the leading country in S-CO2 research, followed by China and South Korea. Future development should focus on accelerating the commercialization of S-CO2 power systems.

Summary: CO2 has gained popularity as a refrigerant due to its low global warming potential, non-toxicity, non-flammability, and low cost. However, it requires more compressor power under moderate and high-ambient conditions, necessitating cycle modifications to achieve comparable coefficient of performance values.

Experimental modeling of a lubricated, open drive scroll expander for micro-scale organic Rankine cycle systems

Ramin Moradi et al.

Summary: Scroll compressors converted into expanders are a good choice in micro-to-small-scale organic Rankine cycle (ORC) applications. Several studies have tested and modeled scroll expanders in ORC systems to assess their performance and reliability in off-design conditions. The experimental data are used to modify the available semi-empirical model in the literature, resulting in good accuracy in predicting the expander's overall performance in different operating conditions.

Thermodynamic, economic, and environmental analyses of various novel ejector refrigeration subcooled transcritical CO2 systems

Vinay Kumar Yadav et al.

Summary: The study proposes and compares various ejector refrigeration-based dedicated subcooling methods in the CO2 refrigeration system. Cycle 4 is found to have the highest performance and efficiency at optimum operating conditions, but with operational restrictions, while cycles without an internal heat exchanger have less environmental pollution. In terms of cost-effectiveness, Cycle 4 is the best choice.

Permeability effects assessment on recovery performances of small-scale ORC plant

Fabio Fatigati et al.

Summary: The study examines the concept of permeability in ORC-based waste heat recovery systems through experimental and theoretical approaches. It identifies key factors influencing this parameter and groups them into dimensionless factors to guide design and outline an easily implementable model-based control of the maximum plant pressure. The study validates these findings through a comprehensive mathematical model of the recovery unit tested on a fully instrumented ORC test bench, yielding a maximum recovered power of 3 kW and efficiency of 4.4%.
