Variational phase-field model based on lower-dimensional interfacial element in FEM framework for investigating fracture behavior in layered rocks

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: The study presents a numerical method for predicting crack propagation path in layered shale rock by developing a lower-dimensional interfacial element and tangential derivative variable within the framework of the phase-field approximation. The model is validated through classical benchmark tests and a three-point-bending experiment, demonstrating extreme robustness in evaluating interfacial fracture and crack-interface interaction.

Investigation of the influence of gas fracturing on fracturing characteristics of coal mass and gas extraction efficiency based on a multi-physical field model

Yi Xue et al.

Summary: A hydro-mechanical coupling model is established to analyze the damage characteristics of coal seams during gas fracturing, focusing on fracture criterion, post-peak strain softening, and non-uniform stress state influences. The differences between gas fracturing (nitrogen, CO2) and hydraulic fracturing are studied based on this model, with factors like compression coefficients, viscosities, and coal permeability affecting fracturing pressure.

Summary: This study introduces a 3D numerical model of multifracture hot dry rock systems and investigates the impact of fracture spacing and number on reservoir productivity. The results indicate that both fracture number and spacing affect the productivity of HDR geothermal systems. Geomechanical variations of fracture aperture, permeability and stiffness can play a crucial role in enhancing system performance.

Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical modeling on acid fracturing in carbonatite geothermal reservoirs containing a heterogeneous fracture

Haoran Xu et al.

Summary: Acid fracturing and hydraulic fracturing are two effective methods to enhance productivity of geothermal wells. Designing an optimal scheme of acid fracturing in geothermal reservoirs remains challenging due to complex chemical reactions between acidizing fluids and reservoir rocks. A modeling framework for coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical chemical processes during acid fracturing has been developed and successfully applied to field tests in Beijing, China, revealing the significant impact of natural and human-controlled factors on efficiency.

Combined Effects of Thermal Perturbation and In-situ Stress on Heat Transfer in Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs

Zhixue Sun et al.

Summary: A new fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model was developed to study the combined effects of thermal perturbation and in-situ stress on heat transfer in two-dimensional fractured rocks. The study identified underlying mechanisms and revealed significant impacts of in-situ stress on fracture apertures and flow rates, affecting heat transfer predictions. The results emphasize the importance of considering in-situ stress effects for accurate assessments of heat extraction efficiency in geothermal reservoirs.

Hongmei Yin et al.

Summary: Geothermal energy is crucial for energy transformation, but reinjection difficulty and heat extraction efficiency need to be addressed urgently. A new leaky downhole coaxial open loop geothermal system shows promising results with heat output up to 930 kW, 3.5 times higher than traditional casing. An analytical and numerical simulation model was established to study heat extraction performance and optimize design parameters such as aquitard thickness and permeability ratio.

Quantitative visualization and characteristics of gas flow in 3D pore-fracture system of tight rock based on Lattice Boltzmann simulation

Peng Hou et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed and simulated the 3D pore-fracture system of tight rock to investigate the effects of micro-fracture morphology and gas rarefaction effect on gas flow and permeability. The results show that gas flow behavior is influenced by these factors, with the pore-fracture structure being more sensitive at low-pressure conditions.

Transient heat transfer in a horizontal well in hot dry rock - Model, solution, and response surfaces for practical inputs

Ali Ghavidel et al.

Summary: This study presents a solution to the transient heat production problem in hot dry rocks using a horizontal well by deriving dimensionless forms of the governing equations and reducing multiple parameters to three dimensionless parameters. Analysis shows that increasing alpha or decreasing gamma leads to higher fluid outlet temperatures in practical scenarios. System responses and temperature-time histories of practical geothermal systems can be accurately and rapidly computed using contour plots and power law response surface models.

A 3D thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling model for enhanced geothermal systems

Xin Cui et al.

Summary: Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are currently the most efficient method to extract heat from hot dry rock (HDR) reservoirs. This study developed a novel 3D thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling model to predict the long-term performance of EGS. The simulation results showed that while EGS maintains high productivity during early injection stages, it degrades rapidly once thermal drawdown occurs.
