Suppressing the Effect of the Wetting Layer through AlAs Capping in InAs/GaAs QD Structures for Solar Cells Applications

Nazaret Ruiz et al.

Summary: Thin AlAs capping layers on InAs quantum dot solar cells have been found to improve photovoltaic efficiency. Analysis shows that with increasing capping layer thickness, the amount of InAs in the wetting layer decreases, but the wetting layer is not completely eliminated. Additionally, there is no compositional separation between the wetting layer and capping layer, rather a single layer structure with variable content of InAlGaAs. These effects result in a drastic change in electronic levels, with the capping layer comprising 1-2 monolayers being the most effective configuration to reduce radiative recombination and minimize potential barriers for carrier transport.

Evaluation of different capping strategies in the InAs/GaAs QD system: Composition, size and QD density features

D. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study compared two different strategies to protect InAs/GaAs quantum dots from decomposition during the capping process, and found that QD volume is a better parameter to assess QD decomposition and PL redshift. Additionally, a decrease in QD density was observed with an increase in average volume.
