Sorting transition-metal diborides: New descriptor for mechanical properties

Xinlei Gu et al.

Summary: This study systematically explores the mechanical properties and brittle-ductile relationship of transition metal dual-borides through first-principles calculations, revealing their remarkable structural stability and hardness. The relative electronegativity of constituent atoms is identified as a distinct indicator to regulate scattered property trends. The composite VEC-REN descriptor offers crucial insights into the mechanisms driving well-regulated property trends in transition metal compounds.

Measurement of the melting temperature of ZrB2 as determined by laser heating and spectrometric analysis

Austin D. Stanfield et al.

Summary: The melting temperatures of two different ZrB2 ceramics were studied using laser induced melting. It was found that the Hf content did not significantly affect the melting temperature. The normal spectral emissivity of ZrB2 was measured at different temperatures, showing a decrease from 0.34 at 3000K to 0.28 at the melting temperature, and then stabilizing at 0.30 in a liquid phase.

Zirconium alloyed tungsten borides synthesized by spark plasma sintering

Dariusz Garbiec et al.

Summary: A series of tungsten borides with different amounts of zirconium substitution were synthesized by spark plasma sintering, and the effects of holding time on the properties were studied. The results showed that the addition of zirconium can enhance the hardness and electrical conductivity of the samples.

Toward energy-efficient physical vapor deposition: Routes for replacing substrate heating during magnetron sputter deposition by employing metal ion irradiation

X. Li et al.

Summary: To meet the growing demand for sustainable development, reducing energy consumption during thin film growth through magnetron sputtering is crucial. Low-temperature growth of dense, hard coatings is also necessary to protect temperature-sensitive substrates. A novel method using metal ion irradiation to facilitate adatom mobility and achieve high-quality dense films at substrate temperatures not exceeding 130 degrees C has been developed, showing promising results in terms of film properties and energy efficiency.
