Nonlinear Energy-Maximizing Optimal Control of Wave Energy Systems: A Moment-Based Approach

Nicolas Faedo et al.

Summary: The article introduces a moment-based energy-maximizing control strategy for wave energy converters subject to nonlinear dynamics. By mapping the objective function to a finite-dimensional tractable nonlinear program, the problem can be efficiently solved.

High-Capacity Wave Energy Conversion by Multi-Float, Multi-PTO, Control and Prediction: Generalized State-Space Modelling With Linear Optimal Control and Arbitrary Headings

Zhijing Liao et al.

Summary: Wave energy converters with capacity similar to or greater than wind turbines can be achieved by using multiple floats in a hinged raft-type configuration with multi-mode forcing. Control is essential for improving energy capture, and linear hydrodynamic models in a state-space form make it possible to implement advanced control algorithms in real time.

Control-informed ballast and geometric optimisation of a three-body hinge-barge wave energy converter using two-layer optimisation

LiGuo Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic approach to optimize the geometry of a three-body hinge-barge wave energy converter, using a two-layer optimization to find the optimal design and control variables. Applying this methodology to a 1:20 scale prototype of the McCabe Wave Pump device, results indicate that optimal device dimensions can be efficiently and accurately found under given sea states, with no obvious benefit in using three barges over a two-barge system.
