Performance optimization and investigation of flow phenomena on tidal turbine blade airfoil considering cavitation and roughness

ZhaoCheng Sun et al.

Summary: A novel multi-objective evolution algorithm based on NSGA-II was proposed to optimize the tidal turbine blade airfoil, considering the impact of cavitation and roughness on aerodynamic performance. Numerical simulations and experiments showed that the optimized airfoil had better aerodynamic performance under rough conditions in terms of cavitation inhibition, with an average increase in lift drag ratio by 20% and average decrease in minimum pressure coefficient by 17.2%.

Effective use of the streamwise waviness in the control of turbulent separation

Artur Drozdz et al.

Summary: This study investigated turbulent boundary layer separation at high Reynolds numbers, demonstrating that a wavy wall with carefully selected amplitude and period can effectively enhance the amplitude modulation effect, delay turbulent separation, and increase wall shear stress. The most effective wavy wall geometry identified resulted in a 13% increase in skin friction relative to a flat plate surface at the point of flow separation.

Leading edge erosion of wind turbine blades: Understanding, prevention and protection

Leon Mishnaevsky et al.

Summary: This overview paper discusses recent studies on the mechanisms, modeling, and prevention of surface erosion of wind turbine blades. It summarizes the latest research on leading edge erosion from various perspectives and discusses experimental testing of anti-erosion coatings, impact of erosion on wind turbine aerodynamics, and meteorological aspects. Computational models of leading edge erosion and development directions of anti-erosion coatings are also presented.

Effect of Reynolds number on turbulent boundary layer approaching separation

Artur Drozdz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Reynolds number on turbulent boundary layer under adverse pressure gradient, revealing that the separation point shifts downstream with increasing Reynolds number due to increased convection velocity close to the wall. Further detailed studies showed that this phenomenon can be attributed to enhanced large- and small-scale interactions.
