How much sleep do you need? A comprehensive review of fatigue related impairment and the capacity to work or drive safely

D. Dawson et al.

Summary: In developed countries, deaths from driving or working while intoxicated have decreased, but fatigue-related accidents remain high. Introducing the legal principle of 'deemed impaired' with regards to fatigue and sleep loss could be beneficial. While measuring fatigue and prior sleep-wake behavior roadside is not yet possible, public education programs should provide guidance on required sleep amounts and post-accident forensic examination of sleep-wake behaviors could help determine unsafe actions and liability more objectively.
