Decontamination and Reuse of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators: Where Do We Stand?

Lydia Cassorla

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in demand for N95 and similarly rated filtering facepiece respirators, as well as interest in decontamination and reuse of these masks. Effective decontamination methods must inactivate pathogens while maintaining filtration, fit, and safety. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, and individual choices must be made based on specific needs, capabilities, and resources.

COVID-19 global pandemic planning: Performance and electret charge of N95 respirators after recommended decontamination methods

Anne M. Grillet et al.

Summary: The shortage of N95 respirators has led to consideration of novel conservation strategies, with studies showing that some decontamination methods do not negatively impact filtration performance and fit of the respirators, while isopropyl alcohol and soap significantly degrade performance. Modest degradation in strap elasticity was observed with mechanical fatigue testing.

Waste respirator processing system for public health protection and climate change mitigation under COVID-19 pandemic: Novel process design and energy, environmental, and techno-economic perspectives

Xiang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel waste respirator processing system to protect public health and mitigate climate change. The system incorporates sterilization and pre-processing technologies to resist viral infection and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a payback time of seven years and an internal rate of return of 21.5%.

Filtering Facepiece Respirator (N95 Respirator) Reprocessing A Systematic Review

Summary: Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, moist heat, and microwave-generated steam processing are effective methods for decontamination of filtering facepiece respirators, while vaporized hydrogen peroxide is a suitable alternative with longer decontamination durations and higher costs. Ethylene oxide, although effective, may leave toxic residues and is more difficult to implement.

Summary: Face masks are essential equipment to combat COVID-19, but their extensive use has resulted in significant plastic waste. Environmental assessments show that reusable masks are the most sustainable option, offering guidance for designing eco-friendly masks to minimize environmental impact.
