Understanding SNAP use patterns among older adults

Leanne Giordono et al.

Summary: Participation rates in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) among older adults have increased since 2010 but remain lower compared to other groups. This study analyzes the patterns of SNAP participation among adults aged 51-69 and finds that older adults with long-term SNAP receipt represent the majority of this group. The lower participation rates are more likely due to challenges in take-up rather than persistence. However, younger cohorts have lower persistence rates compared to older cohorts, indicating that approaching retirement presents unique challenges.

The effects of aging services and the supplemental nutrition assistance program on food insecurity among older Georgians: 2018-2020

Jung Sun Lee et al.

Summary: Using administrative data from Georgia, the study estimated the impact of services provided by the Older Americans Act and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program on food insecurity among older adults in Georgia. Findings showed that home-delivered meals and other services provided by the Older Americans Act reduced food insecurity, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in reducing food insecurity increased, while the discontinuation of traditional congregate meals services led to an increase in food insecurity.
