Operando mechanistic studies of selective oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone over amorphous cobalt oxide

Truong-Giang Vo et al.

Summary: In this study, cobalt oxide (CoOx) was shown to be an efficient and selective electrocatalyst for producing value-added dihydroxyacetone (DHA) from glycerol. Operando Raman spectroscopy revealed structural transformations between CoOx and oxyhydroxides, establishing correlations between applied potential, surface chemistry, and product distribution. This suggests the potential for using inexpensive materials for electrochemical biomass upgrading and studying catalyst activity under realistic conditions.

Electrochemical Routes for the Valorization of Biomass-Derived Feedstocks: From Chemistry to Application

Francisco W. S. Lucas et al.

Summary: The drive to reduce fossil resource consumption and increase renewable electricity capacity has led to exploration of new routes for sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. Biomass is a potential source of platform precursors due to its ability to fix CO2 in the form of multi-carbon organic molecules. Electrochemical methods for biomass valorization are intriguing, but there is a need to evaluate this field objectively and identify pathways suited to electrochemistry.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Glycerol to Dihydroxyacetone in Borate Buffer: Enhancing Activity and Selectivity by Borate-Polyol Coordination Chemistry

Xin Huang et al.

Summary: Selective electrochemical oxidation of glycerol can improve the environmental impact and economic feasibility of biodiesel production, while generating valuable C-3 chemicals. Coordination of borate ions with polyol molecules enhances the activity and selectivity of electrocatalysts, leading to high production of C-3 chemicals. This strategy could potentially be applied to a wide range of biomass-derived sugars and polyols for producing value-added chemicals on low-cost non-noble metal electrocatalysts.

Understanding the Roles of Electrogenerated Co3+ and Co4+ in Selectivity-Tuned 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation

Xiaohui Deng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Co3+ and Co4+ species in Co-based electrocatalyst play distinct roles in the electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), with Co4+ being crucial for the initial oxidation of hydroxyl groups. By tuning the applied potential, selective production of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid can be achieved. This work provides essential mechanistic insights for Co-catalyzed organic oxidation reactions and may guide the design of more efficient electrocatalysts.

Biswajit Mondal et al.

Summary: The electrocatalytic oxidative upgrading of organic molecules is a promising alternative process for clean hydrogen production. An active NiFeOx-based catalyst has been reported as a general platform for electro-oxidation through oxygenation and dehydrogenation. The oxidation efficacy is linearly correlated with the BDEC-H of the molecule, showing that the catalyst can be used for large-scale electro-oxidation of various substrates with good efficiency.
